How to beat the 3pm slump
That mid-afternoon dip in energy is all too familiar. Recent UK research found that 1 in 4 Brits experience a daily energy slump between 3–4pm (when there’s still plenty left to do!).
While an afternoon lull is completely normal, what you eat, drink and do throughout the day can influence how you feel when it hits. Here are four simple ways to support more steady energy throughout the afternoon.
1. DON'T SKIMP ON LUNCH
If lunch leaves you hungry again an hour later, it might not be giving you enough of what you need to stay satisfied.
Build your lunch around protein, fibre, healthy fats and high-fibre carbohydrates. A simple formula to try: ½ your plate vegetables, ¼ protein and ¼ high-fibre carbohydrates, with a source of healthy fat such as olive oil, avocado, nuts or seeds.
And don't be afraid of carbohydrates. Choosing minimally processed, high-fibre options can provide a more sustained source of energy than relying on refined carbohydrates alone. Think wholegrain bread, pasta or rice, sweet potato, quinoa or pearl barley alongside plenty of vegetables, a source of protein and some healthy fats.
2. CHOOSE YOUR SNACK WISELY
If you know you tend to get hungry around 3pm, planning a snack can help you avoid arriving at the biscuit tin craving sugar. Rather than choosing something that's mainly sugar, look for a combination of fibre, protein and/or healthy fats to help keep you feeling satisfied.
Try fruit and a handful of nuts, Greek yoghurt with berries, oatcakes with nut butter or hummus, or crispy chickpeas. For something you can grab and take with you, a high-fibre Gut Bar or Brain Bar can do the job too.
3. GET MOVING
A 10–15 minute walk after lunch can help reduce the size of your post-meal glucose rise and getting outside for a quick walk when the 3pm slump hits can be a simple way to break up a long stretch of sitting and give you a change of scenery.
If you can't get outside, try walking around the office, taking the stairs or simply getting up and moving for a few minutes. Small bursts of movement throughout the day all count.
4. KEEP DRINKING
Sometimes what feels like an energy dip can be made worse by not drinking enough. Even mild dehydration can contribute to feelings of tiredness, so keep your water bottle topped up throughout the day rather than waiting until you're thirsty.
If plain water isn't your thing, try adding fresh lemon or lime, or having a cup of herbal tea. There’s no need to obsess over a specific number, just make drinking regularly part of your routine.
