I use this African proverb constantly in clinic because it captures one of the most important truths about behaviour change: small actions, done consistently, create big, lasting impact.
As we head into January—the season of “new year, new me” and extreme challenges that leave many of us feeling overwhelmed or defeated—I remind my clients that long-term change rarely comes from grand gestures. A simple daily increase of just 5g of fibre has been shown to reduce the risk of dying from chronic disease by 14–15%. More fibre doesn’t just support health; it literally increases your chances of living longer.
The recommended daily intake is 30g, but emerging research suggests 35–40g may be even more beneficial. And yet... only 4% of people in the UK reach even the baseline 30g. Most manage just 18–19g—leaving a gap of 11–12g every single day.
WHERE MOST PEOPLE STRUGGLE (INCLUDING ME)
There are plenty of food-based ways to add fibre:
- Stir 150g cooked lentils into soup or pasta sauce (+7–8g)
- Snack on a large pear + ½ cup raspberries (+10g)
- Mix chia seeds into Greek yogurt (+5g)
On the days when I’m home, cooking, and eating mindfully, this is realistic.
But the truth?
Most days I’m not home. I’m on the go, between clinics, meetings, and travel. Even as a dietitian, I fall short.
And this is where we need to get smart.
